Example of an Abstract: ”Könsmönster i klassrummet”
ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study is to examine gender patterns in classroom
interaction and how they are perceived by pupils in upper secondary school. An
increased awareness of gender patterns in school could help school leaders as
well as teachers to visualize and thereby neutralize the effect of the
importance of gender awareness in a learning environment.
Our survey is based on a questionnaire in two Swedish upper secondary
schools in the Stockholm region. The results can be divided into four
categories: the pupils’ background, the pupils’ perception of their own
achievement, the pupils’ perception of girls’ and boys’ conditions in school,
and how the pupils feel that they are treated by their teachers.
Contrary to former research that we refer to girls in our study have
quite high self esteem even though boys still dominate in the classroom. In
analysing the pupils’ answers our results confirm the general image of the
quiet school girl and the active school boy and also that girls still struggle
from a subordinate position. Further we found that boys take less
responsibility of their studies because being ambitious in school is considered
feminine and doesn’t give boys any status. Our results also show that boys
don’t see themselves as being girls when it comes to knowledge, but still they
brag about their own capacity. We interpret this as a sign on production of
masculinity in the same way that girls produce femininity by being quiet,
clever ambitious and adaptable.
